Kli-nea is a daybed, reminding of antique artefacts that brings together antiques weaving techniques with nowadays needs and comfort. The kline is one of the most important pieces of furniture of the antique period and is regarded as the pioneer of the bed we know nowadays.
The materials used in Kli-nea have a particular focus on sustainability. Samples and prototypes with sustainable upholstery options were tested during the process. The final prototype has self-sewn fabric upholstery panels consisting of robust cotton canvas, cotton fleece and a coconut fiber mat. This means that the upholstery is made of 100% natural materials in contrast to conventional upholstery, that is usually made of polyester. For stability reasons, the upholstery is supported by a mesh of tension straps, stretched over a wooden frame.

Year: 2020
Materials: wood, cotton canvas, cotton fleece, coconut fiber mat, tension straps
Project type: university project

At the same time as creating the CAD-models for Kli-nea, prototypes were made. This included techniques recreating a similar pattern to the antique kline. The goal was it to combine the characteristics of the antique furniture with nowadays comfort. Sustainably alternatives in the field of upholstery were researched and testet throughout the process.
